Standard Poster Sizes Chart (Inches & CM)

There is no single universal poster size. In the US, 11 × 17, 18 × 24, and 24 × 36 inches are common choices. A-series formats such as A3, A2, and A1 are useful when your paper, frames, or print workflow use metric dimensions. Choose by the space on your wall and how far away people will stand, rather than by the size name alone.

Movie Poster Sizes: 24x36, 27x40, One Sheet

A 24 × 36 inch retail poster and a 27 × 40 inch theatrical one sheet are different formats. A modern US one sheet is commonly 27 × 40 inches (68.58 × 101.6 cm); older examples may be 27 × 41. A 24 × 36 inch print is a familiar wall-art size but is smaller than a modern theatrical one sheet. Real collectibles can vary, so measure the print before buying a frame.

The proportions also differ. A 24 × 36 image has a 2:3 ratio; 27 × 40 does not. Placing the same picture inside both sizes without cropping produces different white borders. PosterSheet preserves the complete image and shows that extra space in the preview. For physical product examples, see the MoviePosters original poster catalog.

How Many Sheets Do You Need? (A4 vs Letter)

The table below calculates sheets using portrait paper, a 7 mm margin on each edge, and 10 mm overlap between neighbors. These are the same defaults as the tool. The row and column counts are sufficient for the specified size, with unused space on the final sheets where needed. Landscape paper or a different margin may reduce or increase the total.

Sheet counts include poster tiles only, not the optional assembly guide. Grid = columns × rows.

Medium poster9 (3 × 3)9 (3 × 3)
Large poster16 (4 × 4)16 (4 × 4)

A29 (3 × 3)9 (3 × 3)

Dividing poster area by paper area is not enough. Each row must cover the full height and each column must cover the full width. Printer margins reduce the useful area of a sheet, and repeated overlap takes space without adding the same amount to the finished poster. That is why a two-by-two arrangement of A4 paper does not cover a full A2 poster at these default settings.

The sheet-count calculation

Usable width is paper width minus two margins. Horizontal advance is usable width minus overlap. Columns equal the rounded-up result of (poster width minus overlap) divided by horizontal advance, with a minimum of one. Repeat the calculation with heights for rows, then multiply columns by rows. The preview engine uses this same geometry for the actual PDF.

How to Make a Custom Poster Size

Open the block poster maker, choose “Set poster size,” and enter the finished width in millimeters. Leave height at zero to match your image’s aspect ratio, or specify both dimensions for a frame. You can use custom physical paper separately if your printer supports a stock size outside A4, Letter, or A3.

Measure the visible opening of your frame, not its outside dimensions. If your photo does not share that shape, decide whether the white space in the preview is acceptable before printing. PosterSheet does not crop or stretch the image to fill a frame. For important artwork, print one test sheet to check color and scale.

Which Poster Size Should You Choose?

For a small notice or an image near a desk, 11 × 17 inches or A3 is a practical starting point. For a hallway or a classroom wall, A2 or 18 × 24 inches gives text more room. For a large feature image, consider A1 or 24 × 36 inches and check that the source photo has enough resolution.

Allow space around the poster and think about viewing distance. A high pixel count helps close-up detail; it cannot compensate for tiny text in a design viewed across a room. Compare A4 vs Letter to match your printer, then follow the multi-page printing guide for scale and assembly.
